Does Hormone Matter?
Lily30sFemale
I'm planning to start IVF. Is it necessary to do a hormone blood test before the IVF cycle? Will these results help improve the accuracy of the medication during egg stimulation?
Side note: I have mild PCOS with a 30–33 day monthly cycle.

Answer from the Doctor
Yes, it is important to do a hormone blood test before starting IVF. These tests give your fertility specialist essential information to personalise your medication and improve your response during the stimulation phase. Key hormones measured include:
- Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Helps assess the quality and quantity of your remaining eggs.
- Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)
A marker of ovarian reserve, showing how many eggs you are likely to respond with.
- Progesterone
Indicates ovarian function. Checking progesterone at the right time in your cycle helps determine whether you are ovulating.
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Reflects oocyte (egg) quality, endometrial readiness, and ovulation status.
These results guide your doctor in tailoring medication doses to your body, increasing safety and effectiveness during IVF.
